About RSS Feeds
RSS (Really Simple Syndication) feeds are primarily used to provide automatic updates notifying users of new content on a page. In order to receive this information, you must subscribe to the feed using your RSS feed reader. RSS feeds are usually indicated by an orange RSS button. Otherwise, RSS feeds are represented by logos of the popular software programs used to read and aggregate feeds in one place like Bloglines, Google Reader and MY Yahoo.
What is an RSS Reader?
In order to receive updates via a RSS Feed, you need to have a RSS Feed Reader or Aggregator (as it is also called). The RSS Reader is the application used to check your list of RSS Feed subscriptions to deliver updates to your desktop. In short, a feed reader is an online application, stand alone or web based, that reads and manages content delivered in RSS feeds. A feed reader is to feeds what an email application (such as Outlook) is to email; without it you cannot receive your updates.
Types of Aggregators
Client-side readers and aggregators are typically constructed as standalone programs or extensions to existing programs such as web browsers. Web based readers/aggregators allow you to view your subscriptions from any internet accessible computer.
